Thinking of Place:
Thinking of Place is a collaborative print media project conceived as a means of forging and strengthening connections between printmaking artist groups through the creation of exhibition opportunities and exchanges.
Beginning in 2015 with 5 groups from Auckland and Christchurch in New Zealand, and Melbourne, Ballarat and Cairns in Australia, the curators envisioned the overarching theme relating to ‘place’ as one that offered ample scope for individual interpretation and extrapolation. Artists could imaginatively engage, for example, with concepts relating to ways in which landscape, environment, communities and culture and intertwine, and how myths, legends and meaningful stories adhere to specific places.
The project encourages dialogue across boundaries – geographical, cultural, historical – and aims to foster deeper understandings of how we inhabit, recall and interpret place. Participating artists share stories in their creative practice, engaging with ideas of land, country and collective memories and how those ideas shape our communities.
The project is now in its 4th iteration, with Thinking of Place iv: Fleet commencing its tour in April 2026. Beyond the initial collection of works by 54 artists that was exhibited in galleries in Australia and New Zealand, the international network of collaborating artists expanded through subsequent Thinking of Place collections to embrace groups from Argentina, Australia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, England, Guam, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Serbia, Türkiye and United States of America.
The works for each iteration of Thinking of Place [see Exhibitions] have been produced in small editions, which has made it possible for the works to be exhibited in different ways with overlapping time-frames. The only limitation for participating artists has been the consistent size of the works on paper – 28x38 or 38x28cm, making the works portable and economical to transport. A printed catalogue has documented and archived each of our collections.
A wonderful group of coordinators for each of the print groups involved liaises between their enthusiastic artist members and the curatorial team. Coordinators also initiate and manage exhibitions in their local areas with the active involvement of their team, resulting in a total of 27 exhibitions held to date. Exhibition venues for Thinking of Place iv: Fleet are still being finalised.
Our ambitious collaboration continues to evolve and mature!

Thinking of Place IV:
Fleet is a global collaboration involving 66 artists from 11 printmaking groups from geographically dispersed locations: Goldfields Printmakers and Melbourne Printmakers Group, Australia, North Island Printmakers and Te Waipounamu, New Zealand; Printmakers East to West, USA; Flying Proa: Taotao Tåsi Guam and Japan; Funen Printmakers, Denmark; Limerick Printmakers, Ireland; +C2-, Serbia, Norway, Croatia, Boznia Herzegovina, Canada and USA; Canada West Studios, Canada; Anatolian Printmakers, Türkiye. Each group of 6 artists produced a work in 6 parts for the project, which posits the concept of the vessel as a powerful symbol of journeys, transience, crossing boundaries, traversing spaces and fostering cultural connections. Groups selected their own vessel form and conceptual response, and each artist within the group developed a section of that vessel, employing their own aesthetic and choice of print media, thus allowing for an interplay of individual creativity and collaborative contribution to a larger whole. |
